The most expensive sports cards ever sold

Gagan Grover 9 September 2026

The sports card market has transformed from a childhood hobby into a multi-million-dollar alternative asset class. Here are some of the most expensive sports cards ever sold โ€” and what makes them so valuable.

1. 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle โ€” $12.6 million

Sold in August 2022 via Heritage Auctions, this is the holy grail of sports cards. Graded SGC MT 9.5, it set the record for the most expensive sports memorabilia ever sold at auction. The 1952 Topps Mantle is the card every collector dreams of owning.

2. 2007-08 Upper Deck Jordan / Bryant Dual Logoman โ€” $12.932 million

Sold in August 2025, this 1/1 dual autograph card featuring Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant set the record for the most expensive sports card ever (not accounting for inflation). It was purchased by a group of three investors.

3. 1909-11 T206 Honus Wagner โ€” $7.25 million

One of the most famous cards in the world. It's believed only 50 to 200 were ever produced โ€” Wagner reportedly objected to his likeness being used. A private sale in August 2022 reached $7.25 million.

4. 1914 Baltimore News Babe Ruth (red) โ€” $7.2 million

Babe Ruth's first-ever card, sold in December 2023 via Robert Edwards Auctions. Only around 10 are known to exist. This copy had been kept by the descendants of the paperboy who collected it in 1914.

5. 2003 Upper Deck Exquisite LeBron James Rookie Patch Auto โ€” $5.2 million

Sold in April 2021, serial numbered 07/23 and graded BGS MT 9. At the time, it was the highest sale ever for a basketball card.

What drives these prices?

  • Rarity โ€” lower print runs and population counts mean higher value
  • Condition โ€” a PSA 10 or SGC 9.5 can be worth 10x a PSA 8
  • Rookie cards โ€” a player's first licensed card is always the most sought-after
  • Cultural significance โ€” icons like Mantle, Jordan, and Ruth transcend the hobby

The market shows that a small piece of cardboard can be worth more than a house โ€” if it's the right piece.
